What Even Is Palm Oil?
Elaeis guineensis, or palm oil, is an edible type of oil that is extracted from the fruits of oil palms. The industry is linked to major environmental issues such as deforestation, climate change, animal cruelty, and currently threatens 193 endangered species in Southeast Asia. Findings indicate that if nothing changes, species such as the Sumatran Orangutan could become extinct in the wild within the next 5-10 years, and Sumatran tigers in less than 5 years.
